One of the first decisions any brand faces when sourcing timepieces is whether to go the OEM or ODM route. The two models sound similar but lead to very different costs, timelines, and levels of design ownership. Here is how to tell which one is right for your watch brand.
OEM Watches: You Design, We Build
In an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) arrangement, your brand supplies the case shape, dial layout, strap design, and specifications, and the manufacturer produces the watch to that exact brief. According to Wevolver’s manufacturing guide, OEM production keeps design ownership and intellectual property with the brand, while the manufacturer contributes production capability and components.
Choose OEM when:
- You already have, or want to commission, an original design competitors cannot simply reorder.
- You are building a long-term product line and want full control over case, dial, and strap specifications.
- You have the lead time to go through prototyping and sample rounds before mass production.
ODM Watches: Ready-Made Designs, Your Branding
With ODM (Original Design Manufacturer), the factory already has a catalogue of finished watch designs. Your brand selects a style and applies its own dial branding, caseback engraving, straps, and packaging. This is the faster, lower-cost route to market, and it is how most new fashion and D2C watch brands launch their first collection.
Choose ODM when:
- You want to launch quickly without a lengthy design-and-tooling phase.
- You are testing a new category before investing in fully custom tooling.
- You want access to proven, market-ready styles across categories like couple watches, silicone watches, and multifunction watches.

Many Brands Use Both
